UK to test cancer detection before symptoms begin

  • 15.09.2020

In the UK, trials of a test to detect cancer before the first symptoms begin as the BBC reports on September 13.

It is noted that the test will last about two years. They will be attended by 140 thousand volunteers aged 50 to 77 years.

At the moment, oncology is diagnosed after a biopsy - taking a particle of body tissue for the presence of appropriate tumor markers. However, the patient receives a referral for this study only after the first symptoms appear. In addition, often doctors do not know exactly where to look for a tumor after a deterioration in well-being. Also, the diagnosis is complicated by the impossibility of applying a biopsy to a number of organs, for example, the bladder or prostate.

The new technique is based on the detection of DNA fragments of cancer cells in the blood. The technology was created by San Francisco-based biotech startup Grail, founded in 2015, specifically for early cancer detection.
