The 3rd European week of early diagnosis of head and neck cancer took place in Russia.

The press-conference related to summing up the results of the 3rd European week of early diagnosis of head and neck cancer will take place on October 20, 2015 in the small hall of the RIA news press center. The event is organized by the Non-commercial partnership “Equal right for life” with support from the European Association of head and neck cancer specialists (EHNS), the Association of Russian oncologists, the Society of head and neck cancer specialists, the All-Russia Federation of head and neck diseases specialists and Merck company.

The press-conference with participation of leading experts of Russia will be broadcast on-line on the website of NCP "Equal Right for Life" www.ravnoepravo.ru/rian20_10/ and RIA News at www.pressria.ru. The broadcasting will begin on October 20 at 14.00 Moscow time.

 

In the structure of cancer morbidity head and neck tumors make up about 5% with the absolute number of patients constantly rising. Annually in the world the diagnosis of head and neck cancer is made to nearly 600 thousand patients; more than a half of them die. In Russia about 15 thousand people die of malignant newgrowths in head and neck every year, provided that 90% of them could survive, if the desease was found in due time, and the treatment was prescribed at an early stage.

Within the framework of the 3rd European week of early diagnosis of head and neck cancer OnkoDozors took place at the largest enterprises of Irkutsk, Chelyabinsk, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnogorsk during which factory workers were examined for tumoral and pretumoral newgrowths. Besides, in a number of medical institutions events for screening of population and workshops for doctors were held for the purpose of raising cancer awareness among the experts specialising in head and neck organs – neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, oncologists, stomatologists. During the press conference leading experts will comment on the results of the week, they will discuss questions of prevention and early diagnostics of head and neck carcinoma as well as the problem of availability of modern methods of treatment to oncological patients.

· Mikhail Ivanovich Davydov, academician of RAS and RAMS, the chief oncologist of Russia, Director of FSBI “Russian oncological research center named after N.N. Blokhin” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation;

· Igor Vladimirovich Reshetov, corresponding member of RAS, Director of academic and clinical center of reparative and plastic surgery of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov;

· Victoria Vladimirovna Dvornichenko, Doctor of Medicine, the chief doctor of BPHF “Irkutsk regional oncological clinic”;

· Oleg Ivanovich Kit, Doctor of Medicine, Director of FSBI “RROI” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation;

· Dmitry Aleksandrovich Borisov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Association of Russian oncologists, Executive director of Non-commercial partnership “Equal right for life”;

· Rogier Janssens, Director of Merck Biopharma in Russia and the CIS.

Topics for discussion at the press-conference:

· The results of the 3rd European week of early diagnosis of head and neck cancer

· The problems of financing of cancer care facilities in Russia

· Availability of modern methods of treatment to oncological patients in Russia and regions

· Projects in the area of oncology, support of weeks of early diagnosis.

Oncological diseases are an acute social issue demanding attention from the government, public and medical organizations. Therefore such information and preventive campaigns as the European week of early diagnosis of head and neck cancer need full-scale mass media coverage. It will contribute not only to a higher level of detection of malignant newgrowths at early stages, but also to a higher oncological awareness of healthy citizens.
